St Helena Distillery

St Helena DistillerySt Helena Island is one of the world’s best kept secrets and the ‘St Helena Distillery’ even more so. The once active Volcano that forms the island rose above the sea more than fifteen million years ago from the floor of the South Atlantic Ocean, at a point 1,200 miles from the south-west coast of Africa and 1,800 miles from South America. The St Helena Distillery therefore has the undisputed claim of being ‘The Most Remote Distillery in the World’.

The St Helena Distillery uses German-made Holstein spirit distilling equipment imported and installed in 2006 and is run by Directors, Donny Stevens owner of the world-famous Donny’s Bar on Jamestown Seafront, once part of the Castle Moat which served as St Helena’s original first line of defence hundreds of years ago, and Head Distiller Paul Hickling. Donny was born on the island and Paul, originally from Wales, is married to a St Helenian and trained in Germany to become proficient as a qualified distiller, and now oversees every step of the Distilling process.

TUNGI Cactus Pear Spirit

TUNGI Cactus Pear Spirit

Tungi is the local St Helenian name for the prickly or cactus pears. The plants (Opuntia vulgaris) were originally brought to the island by the colonial ivory traders from East Africa in the 1850′s. Three varieties of Tungi cactus now grow wild and organically on the dry coastal regions of the island.

Tungi spirit was first developed on St Helena as ‘prickly pear whisky’ from the 1850, but now using the most modern distilling techniques, and using a blend of two principal varieties of Tungi Paul has produced the optimum flavour of today’s Tungi product which is ideal both for straight shot-drinking and for cocktails and combinations like the ‘Jamestown Mule’ and ‘Holdfast Tom’

The making of Tungi Cactus Pear Spirit begins in the month of March, when freelance fruit pickers commence the 3-month harvesting season, selecting only the ripest prickly pear fruits from the island’s widespread cactus-growing hillsides.

After distillation, ‘Tungi’ is chilled, filtered, diluted, tested for consistency and strength, and finally bottled in the drinks industry’s most unique container –the ‘Jacob’s Ladder Flask’, a representation of St Helena Island’s famous Jacobs Ladder landmark which is the world’s longest straight staircase, rising over 1000ft up a sheer cliff above the distillery to the defences on the cliff top above.

Tungi is a clear smooth spirit, refreshing and palatable drink of genuine Tungi flavour whilst retaining the robust power and alcoholic strength of the original!

"Jamestown Mule" In a Highball Glass, gently muddle 3 fresh Mint leaves with 10ml of Gomme sugar syrup; add 50ml of Tungi and 25ml of freshly squeezed lime juice. Fill up the glass with ice and top up with good quality ginger beer, gently stir to distribute the mint leaves through the drink and serve.

"Holdfast Tom”: Into a Boston glass pour 25ml of Tungi, 15ml of Ginger Syrup, 15ml of squeezed lime juice, then 35ml of Tapatio Blanco Tequila (known for its peppery flavour)and 25ml of Apple Juice. Fill with ice, gently shake, single strain in a Martini glass, garnish with an apple fan with a thin slice of ginger rolled on top.

White Lion Spiced Rum

WHITE LION Spiced Rum

St Helena White Lion Rum commemorates the island’s celebrated ‘sunken treasure’ shipwreck, when the Dutch vessel ‘Witte Leeuw’, sunk in James Bay in 1613 after a brief but spectacular naval action with the Portuguese.

Returning from Java, she was carrying peppercorns, nutmeg, cloves, diamonds and precious Chinese Ming porcelain and was armed with 30 bronze cannons, one of which is in the Museum by the famous Jacobs Ladder cliff staircase.

White Lion Spiced Rum is an authentic homage to the favoured liquor of the Seventeenth Century sailors who first combined pure white rum and the exotic spices of the Orient with which they had become uniquely familiar. Today it is produced in exclusive quantities and blended at the world’s most isolated working distillery by the Jamestown foreshore.

Midnight Mist Coffee Liqueur

MIDNIGHT MIST Coffee Liqueur

Midnight Mist is an exquisitely smooth flavour-infused liqueur, crafted by hand at the world’s most isolated working distillery on St Helena Island. The process involves the combining of island-grown coffee, handpicked from the steep-sided slopes of this rocky but fertile British territory, with premium quality locally-produced spirit from the St Helena Distillery.

The blend is then sweetened and balanced for alcoholic content to give a consistent and distinctive taste and aroma. This original liqueur was developed exclusively on St Helena using green-tipped bourbon Arabica coffee grown with seed originally brought from the Yemen in 1733. For Midnight Mist the beans are deeply dark roasted and percolated before being blended with St Helena Rum to give a unique and satisfying coffee liqueur experience.
